CoRing: A Silicone Clasp

skills: user research (interview) + persona + empathy map + prototyping
SITUATION
OPENHCI 2019: SYMBIOTE
(10TH STUDENT-ORGANIZED WORKSHOP ON
HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION)

- Persona: Riders that need to follow others’ scooters (traits: impatient, poor sense of direction, unable to multitask)
- Problem: It is difficult to communicate effectively and ride scooters simultaneously.
“The scooter in front of me is too fast and has passed the traffic light! Do them know that I was left behind? Where should I go next?”
“Found that I missed the turn! I keep calling to tell the scooter behind, but no one answers my phone calls. Damn!”
“The scooter in front of me keeps going ahead! But I can't help it...”
➔ How might we ‘help assist the riders in contacting one another while riding scooters’?
➔ How might we ‘safely let the riders know there are incoming calls while riding scooters’?
- Use Context & User Needs: Have to wait, go the wrong way, have to stop temporarily
TASK
CORING: A CLASP CONNECTING WITH MOBILE PHONES

- Slide Up: Stop right away to understand what happened
- Press In The Middle: Inform that the message has been received
- Slide Down: Slow down to wait for others
ACTION
CONDUCTED USER RESEARCH &
PRODUCED AFFINITY DIAGRAMS, PERSONA AND EMPATHY MAP

- Designed questionnaire (riders/passengers, seniority, frequency, gender, age, occupation…)
- Designed interview outline (context, problems, hanging out in a group, doing other things…)
- Conducted user research (interviewed 5 potential users)
- Defined problems with Affinity Diagrams
- Made Persona and Empathy Map
- Produced slide deck (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1q1E5iBrdVqfEBGPkxrjhdNiisVPE8hQh/view?usp=sharing)
- Made a pitch for CoRing
RESULT
RECEIVED POSITIVE FEEDBACK,
‘BEST DEMO AWARD’ & DEMO PAPER ACCEPTED

- Praised by potential users in the exhibition
“Priority will be given to shops with CoRing!”
- Awarded ‘Best Demo Award’
- Demo paper ‘CoRing: solve riders’ problem of following others’ scooters.’ (https://taichi2019.lis.ntu.edu.tw) accepted by 5th Taiwan Symposium of Computer-Human Interaction (TAICHI 2019: humaniFIVE)
